Five reasons to block your knitting

7.3.22

Based on my questionnaires’ in the FB groups, many knitters skip blocking the finished knitted/crochet garment for a number of reasons. Let us find out what blocking is and why it is recommended not to ignore this important step.

What is blocking?

Blocking is the process of wetting/washing or steaming finished knitted parts or garments in order to give them their permanent size and shape.

Blocking can be done before or after seaming

Why I recommend blocking/washing the knitted garment before starting wearing or gifting it.

1. As you knit, the edges of the pieces can be rolled badly, especially in stockinette stitch. Blocking helps to eliminate or reduce this problem and flatten the fabric, which helps with seaming.

2. Blocking helps to even the stitches and makes fabric more pretty. This point is very important for lacy garments and shawls. Most lacy stitches does not look beautiful until blocked (see the first photo in this post). Blocking helps to reveal beautiful lacy stitches and “read” them.

3. Many wool yarns such as merino wool, mohair, angora, etc. become much softer and more hairy after being blocked and washed for the first time.

4. You can make some changes to the shape and size of you knitted garment or pieces (if you block before seaming) as you block. The amount of change that you can achieve with blocking depends on the type of yarn, your knitting tension (how tight the finished fabric is) and blocking method. Wet blocking allows for more changes than steaming.

5. Wet blocking is also an important step to wash out dye residue, grease and other contaminants from knitwear prior to first wear. Every inch of yarn passes through our hands and can absorb grease, dirt, hand cream, etc. All this stuff should be washed out, especially on baby and children knitwear.

Cable Fantasy Poncho - finished project

4.10.21

Recently I have completed another Cable Fantasy Poncho for my older daughter.

Designed in 2015, it became a favourite piece of wardrobe almost straight away. It served my little princess well over many years – first as a poncho, and then as a comfortable short sleeve vest.  Even six years later, she was not ready to pass it to her smaller sister so I decided to knit her a new one.

The new Cable Fantasy Poncho is knitted with my favourite yarn Debbie Bliss Falkland Aran in shade Basil. This yarn is my first choice for all sorts of cable knitting.

I decorated the poncho with wooden buttons in natural colour that matches perfectly with blond hair of my daughter.

The knitting pattern for Cable Fantasy poncho is written for sizes from 2-3 years up to 10-12 years and available from Etsy, Ravelry and Lovecrafts. It is also available as a knitting kit from Mary Maxim.

Last but not least, I could not resist to knit a matching poncho for myself too. So I’m happy to announce that the knitting pattern for Adult Cable Fantasy Poncho will be available this winter. This week I'm planning to open new test knit for it. If you are interested to participate in it and fancy to knit yourself this comfy poncho before the pattern release, please join my knitting group on Ravelry or follow me on Instagram to be the first who knows about the test knit.

I-cord bind off and attached I-cord - Finishing Techniques

11.5.21

In my recent design Transformer Poncho and Hat set I used I-cord bind off for pretty and simple edge finishing.

Since this design is very simple with focus to it's shape I did not want to add any ribbing or textured band along the edge,. Instead, I wanted to keep the edge plain and simple, so I cord was a perfect choice. This technique is also used in my several older designs so I decided to make a quick video tutorial for I-cord bind off. Hope you will find it useful not just for my designs but for other projects too.

However, for bigger sizes of the Transformer Poncho picking up stitches along the edge and working on I-cord bind off can be a bit challenging so there is another useful technique - attached I-cord. It can be added to any edge of finished garments fast and easy.

Knitting pattern for the Transformer poncho is available from Ravelry, Etsy and Lovecrafts

Happy knitting!!! :)
