There’s something magical about winter evenings spent with yarn in hand. For me, the season is always about knitting warm, cosy garments and accessories that feel like a hug against the cold. And when a new hat design comes to life on my needles, the process becomes even more special.
This year, I’m thrilled to introduce my latest creation: the Winterberry Bucket Hat — a playful, versatile design for both children and adults.
Inspiration Behind the Hat
The Winterberry Bucket Hat is a love letter to two of my past favourites: the Trimetry Bucket Hat and the Winterberry Earflap Hat. I borrowed the clean, modern shape of Trimetry and paired it with the textured stitches from Winterberry. The result? A stylish yet practical bucket hat that adapts to your mood, the weather, or even your outfit of the day.
Three Ways to Wear It
One of my favourite things about this design is its versatility. You can style it in at least three different ways:
- Top-hat style: Fold the brim up all the way around for a quirky, elevated look.
- Fedora style: Keep the brim down at the front and fold it up at the back for a chic twist.
- Classic bucket style: Let the brim fall naturally for a cosy, windproof option — perfect for blustery winter walks.
Knitting Details
The hat is knitted seamlessly in Aran-weight yarn, combining simple cables with ribbing panels that give it structure and character. The brim is worked with two strands held together, making it sturdy enough to shape while keeping ears snug and warm.
For my sample, I used Drops Nepal, one of my go-to yarns for cable knitting. If you’re feeling adventurous, try adding a strand of lace-weight mohair — it will make the hat even warmer and give it that extra touch of luxury.
