Knitting pattern for lacy shawl - Flaxynet shawl

30.8.23

I have designed a versatile shawl that suits every season of the year! Knitted in simple lacy stitch within a simple triangular design, this project is also ideal for beginners. Please welcome Flaxynet shawl.

Design overview

Knitted with easy to memorize lacy stitch, the shawl has triangular shape. Simple eyelets create a beautiful drapery fabric with exquisite texture. The knitting starts from bottom corner up which allows for adjusting of length ranging from small bandana or shawlette to a large shawl. You can add tassels to the shawl’s corners or fringe along the edges for an extra special look. You can even use your Flaxynet shawl as a sarong. The design offers so many possibilities!

Yarn choice

Flaxynet shawl is knitted with 5-ply/sport weight linen yarn, which makes it perfect for warm weather as well as for transition from summer to autumn. It can be also knitted in cotton, wool and any yarn blend. In addition, you can use thinner yarn for more delicate fabric or heavier weight for more rustic cozy look.

My sample is knitted with Antigone by De Rerum Natura in shade heron.

Five reasons to block your knitting

7.3.22

Based on my questionnaires’ in the FB groups, many knitters skip blocking the finished knitted/crochet garment for a number of reasons. Let us find out what blocking is and why it is recommended not to ignore this important step.

What is blocking?

Blocking is the process of wetting/washing or steaming finished knitted parts or garments in order to give them their permanent size and shape.

Blocking can be done before or after seaming

Why I recommend blocking/washing the knitted garment before starting wearing or gifting it.

1. As you knit, the edges of the pieces can be rolled badly, especially in stockinette stitch. Blocking helps to eliminate or reduce this problem and flatten the fabric, which helps with seaming.

2. Blocking helps to even the stitches and makes fabric more pretty. This point is very important for lacy garments and shawls. Most lacy stitches does not look beautiful until blocked (see the first photo in this post). Blocking helps to reveal beautiful lacy stitches and “read” them.

3. Many wool yarns such as merino wool, mohair, angora, etc. become much softer and more hairy after being blocked and washed for the first time.

4. You can make some changes to the shape and size of you knitted garment or pieces (if you block before seaming) as you block. The amount of change that you can achieve with blocking depends on the type of yarn, your knitting tension (how tight the finished fabric is) and blocking method. Wet blocking allows for more changes than steaming.

5. Wet blocking is also an important step to wash out dye residue, grease and other contaminants from knitwear prior to first wear. Every inch of yarn passes through our hands and can absorb grease, dirt, hand cream, etc. All this stuff should be washed out, especially on baby and children knitwear.

Dream Hat and Cowl sets - knitting projects

31.1.21

Happy knitting everyone! I hope you continue to stay safe and healthy.

It is end of January already and I haven't been able to write a single post yet - the life is so busy with home schooling for two older girls, looking after my little son and house keeping. I still keep working on my new designs slowly and even managed to open a few test knits. Today I'd like to share a few completed projects of mine knitted following my earlier patterns - Dream Hats and Cowls for my girls. They wanted something similar and I wanted to enjoy relaxing knitting while watching TV.

Those comfortable hats and cowls can be knitted in no time. They don't have any complicated stitches or advanced techniques. All accessories are knitted in  stockinette and decorated with a narrow vertical stripes in garter stitch.

Both hats and cowls are knitted in the round with Drops Air which is Aran weight yarn. The cowls are knitted bottom up so the knitting starts back and forth and then continues in the round. You can also see the photo of original design below:

The original set is knitted with Dream in colour Classy which is worsted weight yarn.

Other knitting garments shown on these photos are Frosty Morning Hat, Cable Leisure Vest and Cable Fantasy sweater

Lacystorm Sweater pattern release

4.12.20

Knitted with alpaca-silk blend yarn, this sweater is really warm and comfortable for any season despite lacy stitches.

Lacystorm sweater is perfect for layering as well as for wearing along. The sweater is designed with positive ease about 10-20cm/4-8 inches. It has dropped shoulders, long sleeves and round neck.

To compensate for the quantity of lacy stitches, I decided to stick to the simple boxy silhouette. So the sweater is knitted with minimum shaping. Even the sleeves top edge is straight line which allows for easy seaming.

For this sweater I used Askham 4-ply in shade Blossom from the local yarn dyer Eden Cottage Yarn. I’m not the person who normally wears a lot of pink, but I’m so in love with this shade. Those lacy stitches are really easy to memorise that makes the knitting very enjoyable and relaxed. The only difficulty I had was the binding off the shoulder and sleeves edges.

As a knitter, who has a tendency to tight knitting, I couldn’t get a relaxed stretchy edge. After a few efforts, I decided to use three sizes bigger needles to solve this problem. Also, I used bigger needles to bind off the neck. Knitting pattern for Lacystorm sweater is written for sizes XS to 3XL and it is available from Ravelry and Lovecrafts
